Charities

All the major expat groups (ALIG, ANZA, AWCP, BWA) are set up to raise funds to support those in the Philippines who are less fortunate. You can carry out rewarding activities through any of these but also you can approach groups directly that particularly interest you. Some of the ones we would like to recommend are here:

  • CARA - Compassion and Responsibility for Animals (external link) CARA help stray animals in Manila and the surrounds. They provide clinics, free rabies vacinnations, a service to catch and treat stray animals and find them a new home, collars, leads, dog biscuits, cats toys, mange soap and lots more...
  • COFFI (external link) Circle of Friends Foundation, Inc. have a Wheel mobile program that provides transportation to the disabled. Their endeavor is to assist paraplegics and quadriplegics integrate socially by assisting them to become professional, thus becoming independent and responsible citizens.
  • EVACF (external link) EVA charity Foundation has raised funds and worked in partnership with NCIP and Dep. of Education in the Philippines to provide more than 40 schools, hundreds of livelihood loans and microfinance projects for indigenous communities displaced through the eruption of Mount Pinatubo. You can get involved in many ways including visiting projects, donating, fund raising, helping with donation distribution, selling Mount Pinatubo stoneware - all profits go to EVACF - or just spreading the word. For more information or to volunteer email ; text (+632)(0)9103735002
  • In Touch - Community Service (external link) Runs a Crisis help line. They provide courses to train counselors and you can volunteer to man the crisis help line. E-mail: for details of their counseling course and Crisis helpline volunteer schedule. Tel: (632)8931893 Fax: (632) 8931892
  • Thursday for Others is run by the Union Church (external link). A weekly trip to provide friendship and support to orphanages, Children's schools, the Women's Correctional Facility, and other organisations. Just turn up at the Union Church to join the group at 8.30 on Thursday and return by lunch between September and May. Contact Ethel Vinson, 0927-738-8502.  EttaSC@aol.com for more information. This is a highly recommended group to join when you first arrive in Manila as it provides a range of experiences of helping within a safe and well organised structure.

  • + : A leading plus sign indicates that this word must be present in every object returned.
  • - : A leading minus sign indicates that this word must not be present in any row returned.
  • By default (when neither plus nor minus is specified) the word is optional, but the object that contain it will be rated higher.
  • < > : These two operators are used to change a word's contribution to the relevance value that is assigned to a row.
  • ( ) : Parentheses are used to group words into subexpressions.
  • ~ : A leading tilde acts as a negation operator, causing the word's contribution to the object relevance to be negative. It's useful for marking noise words. An object that contains such a word will be rated lower than others, but will not be excluded altogether, as it would be with the - operator.
  • * : An asterisk is the truncation operator. Unlike the other operators, it should be appended to the word, not prepended.
  • " : The phrase, that is enclosed in double quotes ", matches only objects that contain this phrase literally, as it was typed.
