Many expats see public transport in manila as unreliable and inconvenient. Therefore most expats have their own transportation. Driving is on the right hand side of the road. You can drive yourself (you can convert your driving license to a local one) or employ a chauffeur but be aware that road rules may be interpreted here with more flexibility than you are used to in your home country.
- Jeepneys and buses are the most common and cheapest form of public transport available in Manila and provide the backbone of public transport for many locals. They are not recommended for expats but there is an air conditioned jeepney service, which you can hire for special occasions or try Jeepney Tours
for their air conditioned tour service.
- MRT is the Manila Metro Rail Transport system which is a single line traveling along much of EDSA. It is a cheap and relatively quick way to travel along EDSA but is very congested during rush hours and you must take sensible precautions to protect your personal belongings.
- Taxis. The hotel taxis are by far the most expensive but also the safest taxi ride you will get. You can arrange one trip or to take the taxi for a period of time. This is very useful when you first arrive in the Philippines. You can also order a taxi by phone. This is a reasonably safe mode of transport. Once you are accustomed to the area, prices and security you may wish to hail a road side taxi. You should ensure the meter is switched on before starting to avoid disagreement on the trip price later. You may also find that the driver is reluctant to take you where you want to go. If there is any dispute simply ask to stop and get out.
